Voice for UK business leaders to speak at IOSH 2017

11 August 2017

The head of the Institute of Directors (IoD) has been added to our line-up of influential speakers at a major international health and safety conference.

170811 Stephen Martin

Stephen Martin, Director General of the IoD, will share his valuable insight and significant experience at IOSH 2017, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s annual conference.

He will join other well-known figures from the worlds of business, media, sport and health and safety on the stage at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Birmingham, UK.

People who would like to attend can save money if they register before midnight on Monday 14 August.

Mr Martin will touch on topics such as how to manage risk and uncertainty in today’s politically and economically challenging environment and factors that motivate business leaders to prioritise safety and health.

Ahead of the conference, he said: “With health and safety risks placing corporate reputation on the line, they demand significant attention at board level.

“For an organisation in any sector to be truly successful, it must get health and safety right. It must ensure that employees do not get injured or become ill as a result of work activities.

“By getting health and safety right, organisations experience fewer sick days and, as a result, increased productivity. Throw into the mix enhanced reputation and the desire of others to want to do business with you and a picture of how vital health and safety is really emerges.”

Mr Martin became Director General of the IoD, Britain’s longest-running organisation for business leaders, in February this year.

His vast experience in business has seen him hold management positions at engineering and construction firms, most recently as chief executive of the Clugston Group, which combines construction, civil engineering, logistics, property development, property investments and facilities management businesses.

He is a long-standing member of the IoD and has been involved in the business community in Yorkshire and the Humber for many years, acting as a business mentor to start-ups in the region and an Apprenticeship Ambassador.

The theme of IOSH 2017, which is being held from 20-21 November, is ‘transforming health and safety across the world’.

Mr Martin’s presentation will be on the first day of the conference. He added: “I am delighted to be speaking at IOSH’s annual conference. It is an excellent platform for business leaders to come together, hear how others are protecting their workforce and share what they are doing. I hope people will join me there.”

Other speakers include legendary Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Geoff McDonald, Executive Director of Open Minds Mental Health. Television broadcaster Cathy Newman will chair the event.

This is the first year that IOSH has organised every aspect of its annual conference. People who book before midnight on Monday 14 August will receive £150 off a two-day pass or £75 off a one-day pass.

IOSH has also introduced a range of new ticket deals including special rates for full-time students and apprentices. To make an online booking, click here. For general conference enquiries email ioshconference@iosh.com, or call +44 (0)116 257 3129.
