    Fresh concerns about how businesses use employees to support colleagues with mental health issues have prompted new guidance for bosses.

    The guidance, released by the chartered body for health and safety professionals, assists businesses with designing robust mental health systems and highlights how ‘mental health first aid’ (MHFA) needs to be included in a wider system of support for employees.

  • Employment reforms tackle “unacceptable” worker treatment

    Workplace reforms announced by the UK Government can help prevent “major issues” such as employees turning up for work too ill or tired, the Chartered body for safety and health professionals said today.

    Employees on zero-hours contracts, ‘temps’ and ‘gig economy’ workers are set to benefit from the reforms. They will be entitled to a written statement of their rights to sick pay and paid leave from the first day of work.

    The 33rd Asia Pacific Occupational Safety and Health Organization annual conference (APOSHO 33), hosted by IOSH in Hong Kong, took place on 4-5 December and saw delegates from across the profession and leading businesses come together to learn from one another and exchange ideas.

    Thirty years on from one of Britain’s worst train crashes, a rail safety expert warns the lessons learned have been forgotten and lives are being put at risk.

    The crash at Clapham Junction in London, which killed 35 and injured hundreds, led to a drive for safety improvements on Britain’s rail network.
