Complete guide to training and competence

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Rural Industries Group has put together a set of training and competence guides.

Tuesday, 08 August 2006

The guides include a vast amount of training information for those who either work in the agricultural sector or those who are training in order to do so. Combined, they amount to a comprehensive directory of training development resources.

Each document covers a separate sector within the rural industries, and outlines legal requirements, training courses available, competence assessments and key contact details. The sectors covered include:

  • Animal care - covering animal care/welfare, dairy farming, gamekeeping, and livestock
  • Environment and conservation
  • Equestrianism - covering horse riding, stables, care, training etc and farriery
  • First aid
  • Forestry and arboriculture operations - covering chainsaws, stump grinding, tree climbing and aerial rescue, brushwood chipper, brushcutters, strimmers and clearing saws, forest machine operations and arboricultural/forest machine operations
  • Hedge laying, fencing and dry stone walling
  • Horticulture and floristry
  • Manual handling
  • Pest control - covering both pesticides application and vertebrate pest control
  • Vehicles and machinery - covering tractors, off-road vehicles, all terrain vehicles (ATVs), lift trucks, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), and abrasive wheels.
