Largest ever UK offshore sector fine

4 January 2016

Oil and gas production company Total E&P UK Ltd has been fined a record £1.125 million at the Sheriff Court in Aberdeen after it admitted failures that led to largest release of gas on record from the Elgin Offshore platform.

Some commentators have suggested it was only luck that prevented ‘another Piper A’ but an excellent presentation at the Piper25 Conference (unfortunately no longer available online) indicated that in fact Total had learned and implemented many key lessons that prevented the Elgin release becoming a disaster. There is also a Step Change video where Total’s HSE Manager highlights those aspects of immediate concern to the workforce, how they involved and consulted with the people involved and eventually brought the blowout under control.
