Health & Safety Executive alert on Ex equipment barrier glands

9 February 2016

HSE’s Safety Bulletin HID 1-2016 draws attention to a small but key difference between the relevant international standard and the equivalent British standard with respect to selection of barrier glands. There is evidence that the difference results in an additional fire and explosion risk.

The concern is being raised with IEC. Until the matter is resolved, HSE have defined an Annex to the UK document as a ‘Normative Standard’ for UK duty holders. This decision affects the design, selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Wherever you are based, it would be wise to alert your Electrical Technical Authority to this HSE Bulletin.
