Chair's Update

IOSH Construction Group Chair's Update 2018

It is a pleasure to have taken over the Chair of the Construction Group. Our past Chair, Paul Haxell, did an excellent job in re-energising the group over the last 3 years and I am pleased to say that he is still a member of the committee. Keith Hole has stepped into the position as Vice Chair and is already providing me with invaluable support whilst Lucy Pritchard is now fulfilling the position of Communications Coordinator.

Our supporting committee gives representation from training awarding bodies/trainers, the HSE, academic research, clients, designers / engineers, principal contractors, SMEs, consultants and the international community.

Our 2018-2020 Strategy:

We have now aligned our strategy with both the IOSH WORK 2022 and the HSEs Sector Strategies for Construction. Those being:

  • The IOSH three key pillars of:
    - Enhancing the occupational health and safety professional
    - Building strategic partnerships through collaborate and
    - Strengthening and influencing the IOSHs influence globally
  • HSEs Construction Sector Strategy:
    - Embedding the principles of CDM 2015
    - Focussing on the reduction in the cases of occupational lung disease, MSDs and occupational stress
    - Supporting small businesses to
  • Our three-year work plan will focus on the support of these strategic priorities for the benefit of all our group membership and other interested parties.

The strategy itself is not set in stone and is purposely fluid to allow us to react and move with the needs of the current construction climate, IOSH and our membership.

CONIAN (Construction Industry Advisory Network)

CONIAC advises the HSE and relevant stakeholders of emerging health and safety developments. The Construction Industry Advisory Network, CONIAN provides a platform within this structure for the construction industry to promote engagement with workers to change behaviours and provides direct participation and involvement of organisations with the direction for managing construction risks.

The IOSH Construction Group represent IOSH and sit on this forum. We also have committee members who chair and sit on the Working Groups. Though regular communications we will endeavour to keep you informed of the progress of these forums through our microsite updates.

Group Activities

Over the next year we will be delivering our strategy through the following mechanisms:

  • Webinars
  • Microsite updates
  • Articles
  • Conferences and events
  • Collaboration with other Groups and interested parties

Whilst we have made many positive connections and contributions over the last 3 years, we still need to build stronger relationships with other IOSH Groups and Branches. If you would like to contact us you can always email or call our Relationship Manager, Leanne Lowther at The Grange.

Thank you.
