How did you become part of the BTG committee?

Inherited the position from my manager, Jon Ling, when I joined the business.

What benefits do you feel that the BTG brings for you?

I now have a network of specialists that I can call on for support and advice.

What do you do in your “day job”?

I’m the Safety Advisor for Current Affairs, News-gathering and Mobile & Online departments within BBC news.

How would you describe the way you do your role – in 5 words?

Support, understanding, accessible language, training.

What do you find the most interesting part of your role?

So much of what I do is interesting. The teams I support are always trying new things and new ways of working. There’s never a dull moment!

What part of your role presents the most challenges?

The timescales, the teams I support are often responding to breaking news so it can be all hands on deck getting everything in place.

What’s your health and safety “soap box” subject?

Mental Health support/understanding within teams/businesses.

What is your one piece of advice for any safety professional?

Don’t use safety jargon, you won’t make any friends!
