Fire Safety & Storage of Fireworks – Meeting Report

An extremely busy Rogerthorpe Manor welcomed two speakers to talk about Fire Risk Assessment and Fire Safety topics at the IOSH Yorkshire Branch meeting.

David Prince (Fire Safety Fire Risk Assessment Consultancy Ltd), crossed the Pennines to receive a warm Yorkshire welcome and talk about Fire Safety Legislation. In particular, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) and its relationship with the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM).

A former Fire Safety Officer with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Dave is now a Director of his own Fire Safety Consultancy, providing a breadth of knowledge and experience on a very current and complex subject area.

Dave talked about the various “Articles” within the RRO, the role of the ‘Responsible Person’ and the role of the ‘Competent Person’. He covered a review of recent Fire Safety prosecutions, providing examples of conditions found and the potential ramifications.

The presentation was very well received by a huge audience and Dave was overwhelmed by a number of very interesting questions and debates.

Steve Hatton (Fire Safety Inspector, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service), gave a short presentation on the Storage of Fireworks and Pyrotechnics.

He started his presentation by outlining the work currently being carried out by WYFRS in the wake of the Grenfell fire tragedy.

Steve went on to talk about the licensing and storage requirements for retailers and small business’s storing fireworks. He gave visual examples of poor storage methods and talked about the expectations of the fire and rescue service and other licensing authorities with regards to safe and secure storage. The presentation was very informative and was well received by all who attended.
