Sport safety event

With rising awareness of the safety and health in sports and as part of continual WSH professional development, IOSH (Singapore branch) arranged with Singapore Sport Council (SSC) to conduct a Sport Safety Champ Programme on 12th Nov 2014. In all 13 participants attended the Sports Safety Champ programme.
The programme kicked off with the introduction of risk management for sport safety. Mr Vincent lee, Manger (Sports Safety) explained that the holistic approach of managing risk associated with various sports. The concept of using a self-checklist (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire) PAR-Q and the usage of Screening, Adequate hydration, Fair play, injury prevention and Environment/ Equipment (S.A.F.E) guide will help the individual to check the readiness for the sports.

Case studies related to sports safety were shared. Technical aspects of “Shallow Water Blackout” was introduced with sharing of personal experiences. Shallow water blackout would normally occurred when one hyperventilate or over-breathing before diving or swimming underwater in a pool. Emergency and first aid measures such as the concept SSC use as RICER (Rise, Ice, Compress, Elevate, and Referral) was familiarised to the participants.
During the Q&A session Delphine Fong, Director Safety Management | Active SG shared her experience in managing the sports safety.
