IOSH membership grade:

Why I serve as a committee Member:

I believe that IOSH is a great ambassador in promoting Health & Safety, endeavouring to get people to understand and appreciate that complying with Health & Safety legislation in a business/organisation is not just about some hoops you have to jump through to avoid prosecution but that it is vital and beneficial in terms of saving lives, avoiding people developing health issues and ultimately as a result of these things enhancing profitability.  Also having been a member of IOSH for 8 years now, I feel I have benefited both professionally and socially from being a member. By becoming a Committee Member I hope that I can contribute to the ongoing work of IOSH and, in turn, others will benefit.

My background and experience:

After graduating from Queens University Belfast, an opportunity arose and I started work in retail management.  However, I had an interest in Health & Safety going back to when my family had a business in the construction industry specialising in industrial insulation.  As people probably are aware this part of that industry is associated with asbestosis and the huge health and safety issues surrounding that condition.  This interest resulted in me returning to university to complete a Master’s Degree in Health and Safety. Since then I have gained significant experience working in the public and private sectors and for the last five years I have been a self-employed Health & Safety Consultant advising clients across a diverse range of business sectors..

My specialist skills and knowledge:

My main specialism is Fire Risk Management within the Care Home Sector.  Fire is a major risk in a care home environment and it is critical to such businesses that they are provided with the best advice available to ensure that this risk is maintained at the lowest possible level.
