November - Managing the Risk of Legionella in Water Systems

A very detailed presentation from Dave Howarth – Technical Manager of Hertel Solutions Ltd (hsl). Dave overviewed the background to Legionnaires Disease & Risk Systems, the requirements of The Approved Code of Practice and Guidance L8 and then how Hot and Cold water services should be monitored and managed.

October – Asbestos - The hidden danger

A very informative presentation from Matt Dawes Technical Manager of Bradley Environmental. Matt covered the nature and presence of Asbestos in buildings from import right up to 2013, Asbestos diseases and death rates, and what the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 require, specifically focusing on Reg. 4 Duty to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises including how to maximise on surveys and then Reg. 5 Identification of the presence of asbestos including how to manage work undertaken and training requirements.

September – Building Information Modelling (BIM) and New Build Construction 

A two part afternoon, at the Shotton New School Construction Site, where Stuart Hadfield of Lovelock Mitchell Architects overviewed what BIM is and how it has been used on this construction project. Dawid Cloete of Read Construction and Ian Edwards of Flintshire County Council discussed the benefits of using BIM to both project and H&S management on this new build school. This was followed by a short tour of the site to see the standard of construction safety in practice.

August – Pristine Condition Manual Handling

An excellent presentation from Davey Snowdon the CEO of Pristine Condition. He overviewed how he came to be in the Manual Handling Training arena – from a weightlifting background and how Pristine Condition use weightlifting techniques to training operatives with their innovative techniques.

May – Stress

Prof. Cary Cooper gave an excellent overview on stress and stress management in the workplace. He considered the cost of stress, levels of Employee Satisfaction, the move to presenteeism, the physical and psychological symptoms of stress, the ailments recognised to have a stress background and the sources of stress.  Finally he overviewed a case study of successful stress assessment and prevention in the workplace.
