Chris Kennedy

Health, Safety and Estates Manager, Kedleston Group Ltd.

I have been involved in Health and Safety for the last 17 years holding professional qualification for the last 12. I am passionate in my practice believing that all people who work for a living and those affected by that work have the right to return home safely every day. I don’t see that duty confined to my working life and will often intervene when I see activities being carried out that pose a serious risk to the persons involved or passing by. I currently work in the education sector for a company specialising in the care and education of young people with severe behavioural disorders and autism. Holding the brief for H&S and Estates is a challenging and demanding role which I thrive on. I face a wide range of issues every day and as a result I am constantly learning and improving my practice through direct action and proefssioanl training. . It is very satisfying to see the improvements in safety delivery and practice that have come into place during my five years with the company. That being said I am very fortunate to work for a CEO who sees the safety of his charges as a matter of moral principle.

I have had a varied career prior to my involvement in the education sector and the health and safety issues it poses. I have had experience working on construction sites, as a professional sound and lighting engineer and the maintenance manager of an outdoor centre in Scotland. All of these roles have prepared me for the challenges and knowledge requirements of my current post. I have also been active in the voluntary sector serving on the mountain rescue team whilst in Scotland and as a community first responder in Lutterworth.

I have been actively involved with the Midlands East District first attending meetings in 2005. I have been a committee member for 8 years spending time as secretary for 2 years. I enjoy serving on the committee helping our members to develop their own H&S careers whilst adding to my own professional development. I have particularly enjoyed mentoring individuals on their CPD and assisting in the planning and delivery of our annual event days. Serving on the committee has helped me develop strong professional networking connections both inside and outside of IOSH and led to my current role after being recommended by a fellow committee member. I would like to see the East District achieve Branch status as we have led the way in member engagement and representing members concerns. Many of the innovative ideas such as CPD workshops, discussion forums and the annual CPD quiz have been copied by other branches and districts. Our growth in numbers demonstrates our commitment to meeting the needs and concerns of our members.
