My Career - Previous and Current Positions

For the last 7 years I have been working in technical development in a pet food manufacturing plant, over-seeing trials and working on product formulations in an effort to enhance the products and assisting in the production of new variants.

I have also carried out forklift training “in-house” since 2004 when I was given the opportunity to attend the necessary RTITB accredited course.

I finally managed to acquire a position in Health and Safety this year with a new role which was created, which combines my role of forklift instructor with the management of the site forklift fleet and all aspects of health & safety within the warehouse and tasks utilizing manual handling equipment.

My IOSH activities

An affiliate member of IOSH since late November 2016, joining with the intent of developing my skills. I have been impressed by what I have experienced at Branch and Committee meetings, networking with more experienced members and intend to make a contribution.

Branch Committee work/background

As a member of the Mid Shires committee this provides the ideal learning opportunity for me to learn from experienced IOSH members and at the same time I can give something back for all the assistance I have been given since joining IOSH.

My duties whilst working in the committee, I operate in the branch equipment team. I have the responsibility to organise the storage arrangements in such a way that the committee members understand the stock levels of equipment and its availability.

Aims for IOSH/ Mid Shires Branch

Since last year when I decided to “again” try to break into Health & Safety as a career I have been overwhelmed by the success I have had. My aims presently are to assimilate into my new role and develop my skills to assist in the creation of a safe working environment for my employer, and to develop a better culture throughout the company.

I am taking my role and allowing myself to develop without giving too much thought towards the future. As long as I am adding value to my position, and not just doing the job, I am happy to allow the role to naturally take me in whatever direction that may be.

My Interests/Hobbies

I enjoy keep fit and like to take part in amateur sportives such as obstacle runs and have just taken part in my first triathlon. I’m not that fast or particularly good at anything but I do take part.

My other interest in life is motorcycling, the feeling of freedom when you’re on your own. I have a particular interest in the Nurburgring having been a couple of times and anticipating when I can get over there again.
