IOSH’s Presidential Visit to the Caribbean

The Caribbean Branch hosted another successful Branch Meeting on Saturday 2nd July, 2016 at the Courtyard by Marriott, Audrey Jeffers Highway, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The event was streamed live via Blue Jeans Video Conferencing and available to all our members who were unable to attend.

Dr. Karen McDonnell, IOSH President

Dr. Karen McDonnell, IOSH President, delivered the feature presentation which was themed “Working together to tackle psychosocial risks – a challenge for the OSH profession”. She spoke about the following elements in great depth:

  • Recognizing and understanding the effects of pressure and stress;
  • Educating individuals and managers by raising awareness / understanding of psychosocial risks;
  • Identifying causes and targeting resources to prevent / remove / control stress related hazards;
  • Using health and safety practitioners with human resource, occupational health and managers in a combined approach; and
  • The role of the OSH Practitioner to drive health promotions;

Dr. McDonnell also spoke about the initiative titled “Managing Stress: Train 2015 Challenge”, which was led by IOSH and Healthy Working Lives (HWL) in the year 2015. This was a free training initiative which aimed to help employers train over two thousand and fifteen (2015) employees during 2015 to identify and manage stress and mental health issues in the workplace in Scotland.

There was a discourse regarding IOSH’s new initiative “Mental Health First Aid” - an educational course that teaches how to identify, understand and help a person who may be developing a mental health issue.

Curt Cadet, Chair - Caribbean Branch

Mr. Curt Cadet, Chair, concluded the evening by giving a vote of thanks to Dr. Karen McDonnell and fellow members who attended the event. A special welcome was extended to the Acting Executive Director of the Trinidad and Tobago Occupational Safety and Health Agency, Mrs. Carolyn Sancho, and her husband, both of whom are members of IOSH.
