The IOSH Rail Industry Conference is a must-attend event for all safety and health professionals and operations managers across the rail industry.

Each year the conference invites an inspiring panel of industry experts to deliver useful, interactive and thought provoking sessions. It provides sector specific topics, legal updates and developments, as well as examples of best practice for you to take back to your workplace. The conference is an ideal platform to network with fellow professionals, debate current issues and ideas, and develop new skills.

The 2016 conference moved away from the premium rates of London to the Nottingham Belfry in the Midlands. This allowed us to significantly reduce our ticket prices, making this flagship conference more affordable and accessible to our members and non-members. The conference attracted over 100 delegates, showcased a supporting exhibition of health and safety products and services, and hosted an inspirational panel of passionate speakers from across the industry.

Looking ahead

This year’s event will focus on health and safety in a changing railway. Why? We are seeing a continued growth in passenger numbers, which has led to increased investment in renewals and enhancements. In the pursuit of efficiency, capacity and customer focus, further change is planned, including devolution to routes in Network Rail.

We will see changes to organisational structure, new ways of working and franchising, and proposals for new funding, ownership and operational models. Change has the potential to challenge safety performance. It can destabilise established measures of risk control and introduce new hazards such as adding complexity and lengthening lines of communication and accountability. Safety needs to be an integral part of the change process so that it is woven into the fabric of new arrangements and marbled into new organisational structures.

Our speakers, including Stuart Calvert from Digital Railway, and Chris Green from Weightmans LLP, will set out how safety is being addressed as part of the change process, how risks are being assessed, and how new incentives for the industry avoid creating a negative impact on worker and passenger safety.
