This event has been organised to give members an understanding of the risks from a legacy of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) contamination in the UK.

A second presentation will address the issues and controls required when undertaking rail track safety inspections.

The sessions will provide you with a general overview of initiatives which can be taken to assess risks posed from finding UXO, and ensuring safety is paramount when undertaking rail track inspections.


Mark Watson Operations Manager – (1st Line Defence).

Mark will introduce what 1st Line defence is all about, covering the background UXO threat in the UK covering WW1 And WW2 bombing including British and Allied Military Activity, case studies of recent UXO finds, the risk assessment procedure for dealing with the UXO and the mitigation services that are available including recent mitigation case studies. A number of safe UXO finds will be shown to the audience.

John Kear – Head of Operational Safety from GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway).

John has previously worked for the Tyne & Wear Metro, Railtrack and British Rail and he will give a general awareness presentation about rail track inspections, covering legal requirements before undertaking an inspection, what is covered during the inspection and the associated risk assessment processes involved.
