Overview

The HSE and Local Authorities conduct over 22000 health and safety inspections each year.
Find out how the enforcing authorities select premises for inspection and what the inspector is looking for when they conduct the inspection.
You will understand more about what constitutes a material breach of health and safety law (to decide on whether a visit is chargeable or not) and how inspectors make those decisions.
An overview of HSE’s sector priorities will be given and examples will be explored.

Speaker:
Nick Patience CMIOSH
Nick trained as a general nurse and worked in Accident and Emergency, Occupational Health (on a construction site), Intensive Care and Trauma Intensive Care.

He joined HSE in 1995 and has 23 years of experience working as one of HM Inspectors of Health and Safety. He has inspected and investigated in various settings, including construction, manufacturing, public services and fairgrounds. He has operated within HSE’s cost recovery regime and has trained inspectors in its use. He has jointly investigated with the Police, has prosecuted in the Magistrates’ Court and has instructed Counsel for Crown Court cases.

As a qualified trainer he has developed and delivered training. He spent several years in operational policy development and project management. He joined the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health in 1998 and is a Chartered Member. Since leaving HSE in 2018 he has set up his own consultancy. He is a NEBOSH examiner.

In his spare time, he is the Events Secretary for the Kawasaki Triples Club (UK) and is the owner of 6 classic Kawasaki motorcycles (but only one works).
