Dave Phillips was presented with the Presidents Distinguished Service Award by Sandy Jennings for his sterling performance as both the District and Branch BEDA over the past five years, and as one of the IOSH Mentors in 2009.
 
Dave has been tireless in his efforts to assist and guide many Graduates to progress through the IPD programme to Chartered status. 

On 19 July,  IOSH North Wales Branch organised an event raising awareness on working safely in the agricultural sector. The afternoon event took place at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor where lecturers gave practical demonstrations on the safe handling of livestock and using tractors, quad bikes and chainsaws. Delegates included health and safety professionals, farmers and landowners across Wales.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Alun Davies commented about the event:

“The persistently high level of deaths and serious injury on our farms has been a big cause for concern for all those linked to the industry.  I believe that partnership working is the key to making sure that every farmer is equipped with the knowledge they need to come home safe and sound, and this is why I felt it so important that the Welsh Government be one of the signatories to the On-Farm Health and Safety Charter for Wales.

“This is an agreement between many of the organisations representing the agricultural industries, to work to change dangerous behaviour. Events such as this one run by IOSH play a vital role in protecting the ethos of the Charter, and ultimately, in reducing the number of serious incidents and fatalities on Welsh farms.”

On Wednesday 8 June 2011 IOSH North Wales branch held an event called Working Safely in Practice in Porthmadog.

The two-day event was held to raise awareness among local businesses whose employees may come into contact with private level crossings in their day-to-day duties.

In the past nine years, 22 people were killed on Britain's railways while using private level crossings, of which there are more than 200 in North Wales.

Sandy Jennings, IOSH North Wales Branch chair, said: “Level crossings are always a topic under debate here in North Wales because there are a large number of them.

“There is a lot of regeneration going on within the country at the moment and it is important that employers and employees are made aware of the risks associated with working near level crossings and railway lines – we want to make sure fatalities are reduced.

“The event was about demonstrating what can potentially go wrong when working near the crossings and how situations should be dealt with as and when they arise.”

As part of the event, local business representatives visited Minffordd level crossing, Porthmadog, where a staged accident between a car and train was set up on the line. Those attending the demonstration then heard practical safety advice from the Environment Agency, UK Power Networks and Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways surrounding using and working near level crossings.

In addition to the Minffordd crossing visit, delegates also visited the new Porthmadog bypass.

More than 100 delegates attended the event and local media such as the Daily Post, SC4 and BBC Radio Wales covered the story.

The North Wales Branch would like to invite you to attend a full-day networking event on 8 June in Porthmadog. The programme covers all the facets of working safely onsite of a project such as the Porthmadog bypass.

The speakers featured are from a variety of organisations including: Office of Rail Regulation, Environment Agency, North Wales Fire Service, the Health and Safety Executive and local construction companies.

There will also be an afternoon site visit to demonstrate the risks of working near railway crossings and of the dangers involved with overhead and underground power lines (using live pyrotechnics!).

The IOSH North Wales Branch Committee invites you complete a form if you would like to be considered for any upcoming Committee vacancies.

These will be then be reviewed and kept on file by the current Committee. Branch activities and projects depend on the continuity of a Committee made up of members such as yourself who volunteer their time and skill set.

You can put yourself forward for a particular role as it may suit you both professionally and personally. The roles are briefly described on the attached form below to give you an idea of what type of activity and time is involved.

The IOSH North Wales branch is planning a full day event on the Porthmadog bypass project. There will be speakers from the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Fire Brigade.

However, since this is a construction project we would like to cover topics in the construction industry which you believe are important.

The North Wales Branch welcomed IOSH President, John Holden, to address members and attend the annual AGM on 15 April 2010 at Llandrillio College. John gave a presentation focused on the depth of work carried out by IOSH and explained the importance of the IOSH Manifesto. He highlighted how the IOSH voice is heard through lobbying ministers and having a presence at all the political party conferences. John also called attention the large amount of free information available from IOSH in hard copy and on the website.

Re-elected Chair, Sandy Jennings, discussed in detail the branch strategy for the coming year. IOSH Networks Officer, Nathalie Muller, updated the members on how the newly re-structured Networks and International Directorate is able to offer much greater support to branches. Nathalie will be the liaison between this branch and headquarters as well as facilitate the committee to achieve their targets.
