In particular, keynote speakers indicated that CDM does not have to stifle innovative and creative building design.  They outlined and discussed many new projects and refurbishments and how they had been delivered for the client to achieve the highest standard of safety throughout its lifecycle. Some of the solutions proposed were as creative as the buildings themselves in terms of building maintenance procedures and equipment. 

The venue, RNAS (Fleet Air Arm) museum Yeovilton also gave delegates the opportunity to take in some naval heritage after the event with a visit to the museum.  Despite some technical difficulties in the morning session, the afternoon was trouble free and the event was hailed as a success.

Lifeskills is a permanent, regional safety education and training centre built as a realistic 'village' on the fourth floor of the Create Centre, Hotwells, Bristol.

Lifeskills is designed to help children, adults with learning difficulties and older people learn about safety in a fun and practical way, specifically in the home, on the road and during leisure time.

RoSPA’s Road Safety Department, as part of its charity work, is running a project in partnership with the Driving Standards Agency about driving for work. RoSPA is seeking the views of employers of young drivers.

The main way RoSPA is doing this is via an online questionnaire which can be completed through its web page.

The main areas of investigation for the questionnaire are:

• the views of employers on how well the present system of driver training and testing prepares young people for the sort of driving they do for work
• whether employers would recognise and make use of a 'driving for work qualification' when recruiting or managing young staff who drive as part of their job
• if so, what should be included in such a qualification or training programme.

As part of the project, RoSPA is also running more in-depth interviews with some managers, and focus groups with young working drivers themselves. The results of the project will be freely available and of use to road safety professionals and managers of young drivers – to help better understanding of the risks and ways of reducing them.

The executive committee of IOSH Bristol and West Branch encourages you to contribute to this project in the hope that it may reduce the number of work- and non-work-related traffic injuries and fatalities involving young drivers.
