The recipe for safety: National Food and Drink Manufacturing
Conference 2010
Workplace injuries in food and drink
manufacture have dropped by half over the last 20 years.
Now the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is
hoping to drive the figure down further with its annual conference
for the industry later this month.
Held at the Oxford Belfry Hotel, in Oxford, on Tuesday and
Wednesday, 28 and 29 September, the National Food and Drink
Manufacturing Conference 2010 will highlight the main ingredients
for keeping injuries at bay. The event focuses on providing
solutions to potential slip-ups in health and safety within the
industry.
And on Tuesday night, the Gala dinner and National Food and
Drink Health and Safety Awards will reward Dragon’s Den-style
inventors who have developed innovative projects that have solved
problems and had a positive impact on their working
environments.
Celebrating 20 years since the introduction of the joint Health
and Safety Executive (HSE)/Industry initiative, ‘Recipe for
Health’, the event features a talk by Richard Morgan, Head of Food
and Drink Manufacture Section within HSE’s Agriculture and Food
Sector. He will present, ‘The right ingredients: National injury
data and the ‘Recipe for safety’ initiative’, during Tuesday’s
programme.
Mr Morgan said: “Since the joint HSE/Industry ‘Recipe for
safety’ initiative began in 1990, the overall injury rate in food
and drink manufacture has dropped by over 50 per cent.
“This conference focuses on how we can continue to drive down
accidents, improve health and safety in the food and drink
manufacturing industry and deliver the most effective
solutions.”
As well as setting the scene for future health and safety
priorities, the conference’s focus will be on applying practical
solutions in the areas of machinery safety, working at height,
manual handling, slips, trips and falls and the finale –
behavioural safety and leadership. Experts from household names
including Ginsters, Northern Foods and Wincanton will also be
presenting over the two days.
