Local company scoops IOSH award

A company that produces nanotechnology has been awarded for its outstanding health and safety initiatives.

Cambridge-based Carl Zeiss NTS was recently given an accolade by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at the Best Factory Awards 2011, in London, for its dedication to health and safety, engagement with the workforce and fantastic incident reporting record.

Part of the German-owned Carl Zeiss Group, the company is a branch of the global organisations semiconductor technology division. Sales and orders for the manufacturer have almost doubled since 2009, yet in a busy environment the health, safety and wellbeing of staff remains top of the business agenda.

Bob Taylor, managing director of Carl Zeiss NTS, said: “We are delighted to have our excellent health and safety record recognised by IOSH at the Best Factory Awards.

“Health and safety is a vital part of our work - we strive for a safe working environment for all of our staff. As part of our health and safety strategy, we actively encourage the reporting of accident near misses. This enables us to have eyes and ears everywhere, with all staff taking responsibility for health and safety.”

Carl Zeiss NTS was the winner of the IOSH health and safety award at the Best Factory Awards 2011. The awards highlight manufacturing at its best and are rigorously judged by Cranfield University’s School of Management and other industry experts.

Rob Strange OBE, chief executive at IOSH, presented the award and said: “It is great to see good, proportionate health and safety used in practice and to see the benefit it has to business.

“We are proud to have sponsored the health and safety award and to see it given to such worthy winners. Carl Zeiss NTS has an excellent health and safety record, with no reportable accidents or injuries at the site since 2006 – that’s fantastic. It’s clear that they take occupational health and safety extremely seriously and have a positive attitude towards real risk.”
