RIDDOR: IOSH wants your views
17 January 2011
In October last year, Lord Young published
his report ‘Common Sense, Common Safety’. One of the
recommendations in the report was to increase the period a
workplace injury needs to be reported from three days to seven
days.
To move this recommendation forward, the HSE will launch a
three-month consultation exercise in the coming weeks. As part of
this consultation, IOSH would like to hear the views of its
members.
Currently, if an employee is absent from work for more than
three days due to an accident or injury they suffered while at
work, the employer is required to report the incident to either the
HSE or its local authority. Lord Young’s recommendation is that the
three-day period increases to over seven consecutive days – in line
with a GP ‘fit note’ for sickness absence.
How can members get involved?
IOSH is asking its members for their thoughts on the proposed
change to the reporting of injuries and illnesses (RIDDOR). Visit
the
Condocs' section of our website where a summary of the
document and how you can submit your views will be posted soon.
Dr Luise Vassie, IOSH’s Executive Director for Policy, urged as
many members as possible to get involved. “It’s vitally important
IOSH members make their voice heard. Once the consultation period
finishes, we’ll be making a formal submission to the HSE with
IOSH’s views on RIDDOR, so if any member has views, experiences and
ideas on the proposed changes to accident reporting, then please
get in touch via the website.”
