International health and safety official awarded
27 April 2011
An international health and safety official
was made an Honorary Vice President of the world’s largest health
and safety professional organisation, in Guangzhou yesterday (26
April).
Mr Yu Shuxi, President of the Guangzhou Association of Work
Safety Administration, was presented the honour by the Institution
of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) for his commitment to
keeping people safe in the workplace.
Mr Yu said: “I have been studying and working
hard in safety production for long time. As part of my work, I have
been communicating with IOSH for many years and we have made
progress together, setting up a close working relationship along
the way.
“I am honoured to be awarded an Honorary Vice
Presidency from IOSH – thank you. IOSH is the safety organisation
in the world that I respect most and I am grateful that they have
encouraged and recognised my devotion to safety.
“I look forward to learning more from IOSH –
increasing, updating and developing my safety knowledge. Looking to
the future, I am going to make more opportunities to promote the
exchanges and cooperation between Guangzhou and IOSH – helping to
raise the profile of the safety situation of Guangzhou and China. I
hope that we will develop together and expand our mutual
friendship.”
Mr Yu has been heavily involved in devising and implementing
policies, regulations and administrative laws on occupational
safety and health, including the drafting of the Guangzhou Work
Safety Regulations. He currently holds positions as the Counsellor
of the People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality and Auditor of
the State Occupational Safety and Health Management System.
Additionally, he has been a key figure in forming a bridge
between IOSH’s Hong Kong branch and other occupational health and
safety institutions in Mainland China.
Vincent Fong, Chair of IOSH’s Hong Kong
branch, said: “Mr Yu was nominated by our committee members for the
Honorary Vice Presidency. For a number of years we have worked
closely with him to promote best practice occupational safety and
health, raising the profile of IOSH in mainland China.
“He is a credit to occupational health and
safety and his work will have saved a large number of people from
injury, illness and even fatalities in the workplace. We are
looking forward to continuing to work closely with Mr Yu and the
Guangzhou Association of Work Safety Administration going
forward.”
Mr Yu Shuxi, who was awarded his certificate by IOSH President
Steve Granger, is IOSH’s 21st Honorary Vice President.
Mr Granger said: “To become an Honorary Vice
President of IOSH is a great honour only to have been bestowed on a
few people since 1945.
“I personally congratulate Mr Yu on his new
position as a symbol of our appreciation for the hard work and
dedication he has shown.”
