A 54-year-old man has died after attempts to rescue him from a collapsed trench failed. The man was stuck at the site of a new housing estate in Letterston, Pembrokeshire, west Wales.
Emergency service rescuers tried for hours to stabilise the trench and free him at the Station Road site, but they were unsuccessful. Police were alerted to the situation at 10.10am and shortly after arrived on the scene.
A Dyfed Powys Police spokesman said: "All emergency services were at the scene working on a delicate operation to free the man. We can now confirm that a 54-year-old local man tragically died."
He explained that the man's next of kin have been told and HM Coroner for Pembrokeshire has also been informed.
"Police and the Health and Safety Executive are now carrying out a joint investigation into the circumstances," the spokesman added.
