Firm to double oil clean-up efforts
Posted Thu, 29 Jul
An energy company responsible for leaking more than 800,000 gallons of oil into a US river has announced plans to double the number of staff working on the containment effort.
Calgary-based Enbridge said it had yet to discover the cause of the spill, which has coated birds and fish in and around Michigan's Kalamazoo River, but promised to increase the size of its clean-up workforce from 200 to 400. The team will be joined by additional contractors brought in by the country's Environmental Protection Agency.
Chief Executive Officer Patrick Daniel claimed the company was committed to resolving the problem as quickly as possible.
"We've made significant progress," he said. "But we still have a long way to go."
But Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholmm, who surveyed the area by helicopter on Tuesday night, said she was not satisfied with Enbridge's response to the disaster, which was detected on Monday.
The pipeline was built in 1969 and carries around eight millions gallons of oil every day.
