Get the best
Employers must get ‘competent’ advice on
health and safety – it’s the law. But official guidance doesn’t
spell out what that actually means. Someone without the right
qualifications and experience can claim to be a ‘health and safety
adviser’ and that means lives could be put at risk. Our Get the
Best campaign called for a series of measures to recognise and
promote standards in health and safety, tighten up directors’
responsibilities and improve education.
Making our voice heard
• We worked with the UK government to develop a new
register for health and safety
consultants
• We collaborated with the Institute of
Directors and Health and Safety Commission on new guidance for
directors –
‘Leading health and safety at work’
• We published
research looking at the link between expert safety advice and
business performance
• We produced a free guide for employers and recruiters to
help them get the best professional in-house advice,
and free
guides for consultants and companies on what makes a
competent health and safety consultant
