The XVIII World Congress on Safety and Health, Seoul,
Korea
Tuesday, 29 July 2008
Representatives from IOSH attended the
XVIII World Congress on Safety and Health at Work from the 29 June
to the 02 July 2008. Held in Seoul, South Korea, under the theme of
"Safety and health at work: A societal responsibility", the
Congress boasted an attendance of more than 70 invited speakers,
466 oral presenters and 4,550 participants from 121 countries
around the world to discuss the latest topics on safety and health
at work.
The Congress was organised by the International Labour
Organization (ILO), the International Social Security Association
(ISSA), and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency
(KOSHA). The annual APOSHO event was also organised in conjunction
with the congress.
IOSH was involved in the Congress through a symposium and an
exhibition stand at the accompanying KISS exhibition. The presence
of IOSH at the exhibition was very successful and raised a lot of
interest from visitors.
IOSH President, Ray Hurst gave a presentation about the IOSH
"Wise Up 2 Work" website and the Workplace Hazard Awareness Course
(WHAC) as part of the congresses Multi Media Festival.
David Evans and Rakesh Maharaj from the IOSH International Group
led and facilitated the IOSH symposium. Their presentation,
"Systems and people - Cultural influences on Safety Management"
examined the influences of local cultures, traditions and regional
influences on the development of safety and health management
systems and suggested appropriate interventions to resolve health
and safety problems in multicultural organisations by using applied
soft systems techniques. In addition, two further presentations
were given as part of the IOSH Symposium, one by Philip McAleenan
from ExpertEase, Ireland: "Corporate Governance – The Role of the
EH&S Professional" and one by Joel Maline from Antenne ANACT
Basse Normandie, France: "Taking into account real activity for
changing SMS to HMS". A summary paper on the symposium will be
published in the Autumn and available on the IOSH International
Group web pages.
