IOSH visits Hong Kong Branch
Wednesday, 27 August 2008
Ray Hurst, IOSH President; Sarah Hamilton,
Networks and International Director and Laurence Dufour,
International Officer, visited the IOSH Hong Kong Branch from 03 to
05 July 2008 to provide an update on current and emerging issues
and meet with government officials.
First on the itinerary was a trip to the Housing Authority
Headquarters to meet with Ms Ada Fung, Deputy Director of
Development and Construction; Mrs Terry Ching, Senior Safety and
Health Manager and Thimothy Lau, Manager of Safety and
Health. Discussions took place on the topics of Construction
Design and Management (CDM) and behavioural safety, and the
potential for joint seminars in the future.
Later that day Ray Hurst gave an update on the IOSH Strategy
re-focus, the Branch review and IOSH's international activities at
a seminar entitled "meet the President", held at Hong Kong
Polytechnic University. Ray also presented a paper entitled
"Designing safety in.. and keeping it there!". To close the
seminar, all Hong Kong Branch Committee members were presented with
a certificate of achievement, and President's Distinguished Service
Awards were presented to Frankie Hau, Branch Director of Membership
and Vincent Ho, Immediate Past Chairman, in recognition of their
services to IOSH in recent years.
The following day's activities began with a visit to the
Buildings Department in Kowloon where IOSH representatives met with
Mr K K Choy, Assistant Director; Ms Janet Cheng, Senior Building
Surveyor and Mr P H Kwok, Senior Structural Engineer, among
others. Ms Cheng gave a presentation about the department and
its role and activities, and Sarah Hamilton gave an introduction to
IOSH.
Finally, a meeting took place with Architectural Services at the
Queensway Government Offices in Hong Kong. IOSH
representatives met with Mr Yue, Director; Mr Li, Assistant
Director; Mr Wong, Chief Structural Engineer and Mr Chan, Safety
and Environmental Adviser. Introductions to IOSH, the Hong
Kong Branch and Architectural Services were provided, which were
followed by discussions on IOSH CPD and CDM regulations.
These meetings have helped strengthen the relationship between
the IOSH Hong Kong Branch and the relevant Hong Kong government
departments. It is hoped that future cooperation between the two
will develop further.
