IOSH symposium in Turkey a great success

The IOSH Symposium at the 2011 World Congress in Turkey on September 13 was a great success. The two hour symposium themed "Designing out the risk" was attended by over 130 delegates. With a programme of 5 presentations, the Symposium was coordinated as part of the IOSH New Accession Countries initiative.

The programme consisted of:

• A welcome by moderator Malcolm McIntyre, IOSH New Accession Countries’ Chair. Malcolm's presentation "Designing out the risk" gave an overview of IOSH, the New Accession Countries Initiative and the roles they perform

• David Evans, the Chair of the IOSH International Group gave a presentation on the Importance of communication & competence. He discussed risk management within projects and the importance of communication.

• Paul Popescu, a member of the IOSH New Accession Countries working party unfortunately could not attend the symposium so Malcolm McIntyre presented on his behalf, Incorporating Health & Safety in Design – UK and Global perspective. Malcolm spoke about ROAD, Risk & Opportunity at Design which is a risk management tool.

• Derran Williams is a Principal Health and Safety Specialist for the  European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Derran spoke about the Opportunities to improve health and safety in designs within Eastern Europe and Russia.

• Rakesh Maharaj is an Applied Systems Practitioner for ARMSA Consulting. His closing presentation talked about Redesigning Maintenance Management Systems to deliver improved Business and Safety performance.
