ADAS is a research-based consultancy to rural and land-based
industries, which provides business services over a wide range of
issues and areas. The website provides detailed company information
and details on its projects and initiatives as well as many sources
of information and contacts regarding specialist areas of
research.
HSE
Agriculture
This section of the HSE website is dedicated to the agricultural
industry, detailing the involvement and roles of the HSE within the
sector. It contains statistics and case studies on fatalities and
accidents/ injuries and details the HSE’s inspection programme and
priorities for the coming year. It also provides advice and
information on meeting safety guidelines via a ‘Farm
Self-Assessment’ tool. The ‘Farm Safety Forum’ allows open
discussion on agricultural safety issues.
National Farmers'
Union
Homepage of the National Farmers' Union, this site represents
almost three quarters of all full-time commercial farmers in
England and Wales and is the largest farming organisation in the
UK. The site details role, policy and outlook, and provides both
information on membership and up to date news. The NFU also acts as
the UK’s leading rural insurer via NFU Mutual, details of which can
be found here. There is a strong emphasis on regional issues and
diversity, with separate pages for each region of England and a
page for Wales.
BAGMA
BAGMA is the trade association for farm and groundcare machinery
dealers across the UK. The site provides news and membership
details as well as information on operator training and
apprenticeships. It also provides a variety of financial and
business services including testing and inspection of farming
equipment and the ‘Vehicle Health Check Scheme’.
Small
Farms Association
The website of this not-for-profit organisation representing
smaller farmers was founded in frustration at the lack of
representation from the larger unions. The SFA particularly
supports traditional and organic farming methods. The site contains
information on news, events, membership details, and documents such
as minutes and its constitution (for members only). There is also
information on the SFA’s subsidiary body, the ‘Small Farms
Enterprises Limited’ (SFEL), where members can sell their
produce.

DEFRA
Online home of the government's Department of Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs, this site is wide-ranging in its coverage. However,
information is manageable and easily navigated thanks to a Search
and ‘A-Z’ index facility. The site is also divided up into a
variety of quick links relating to individual sectors and topics
such as ‘Farming’. The site details the work and role of Defra and
provides news on current issues and schemes as well as a wealth of
information and official publications.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is Scotland’s
environmental regulator.
REACH
REACH is a new European Union regulation concerning the
Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of
Chemicals.
Forestry
Forestry Commission
This is the website of the Forestry Commission, whose mission is to
protect and expand Britain's forests and woodlands and increase
their value to society and the environment. The site contains
information on its role as policy advisor and implementer and its
management of public forests and woodland. There is a strong focus
on tourism and leisure activities directed towards the interests of
the general public. Alongside this is information on their work in
sustainable forestry, forest research and business links regarding
timber and grants and licences.

Workers' Union
The Transport and General Workers' Union is an activist body that
seeks to protect and enhance workers rights. The site provides

Lantra is the Sector Skills Council that seeks to boost skills and
workforce development within the environmental and land-based
sector. The site provides news on current issues, Lantra’s work and
publications as well as advice and information including a
consultation facility and careers. the website is conveniently
divided up into the 17 industries within the sector and also has
regional links.
Fisheries
Maritime Accident Investigation
Branch
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) examines and
investigates all types of marine accidents to or on board UK ships
worldwide, and other ships in UK territorial waters. Their website
contains details of current investigations, a wide range of free
publications from safety bulletins and accident flyers to
investigation and recommendations reports, and details of how to
report an accident among other services.
Maritime and Coastguard Agency
The MCA is responsible throughout the UK for implementing the
Government’s maritime safety policy. That includes co-ordinating
search and rescue at sea through Her Majesty’s Coastguard, and
checking that ships meet UK and international safety rules. Their
website contains information on maritime matters, Merchant Shipping
Notices, Marine Guidance Notes and Marine Information Notes.
National Federation of Fishermen’s
Organisations
The National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO) is the
representative body for fishermen in England, Wales and Northern
Ireland. It aims to contribute and advance EU and National
Fisheries Policy to ensure a profitable, viable and sustainable
fishing industry.
Royal National Lifeboat
Institution
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) website contains
information about the charity, as well as guidance on beach and sea
safety, a media centre, information on training, links to other
beach and water safety websites and, of course, details on how to
make a contribution to this 24-hour lifesaving service which,
despite costing around £330,000 per day to run, receives no funding
from the Government.

From sea to plate, the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish) aims
to deliver expert knowledge, skills and support which help the UK
seafood industry secure a sustainable and profitable future. The
website contains publications, press releases and professional
information, as well as a wealth of information about seafood,
including hundreds of recipes. So what are you waiting for - tuck

Teagasc
Teagasc aims to assist Irish farm family members and those
working on farms to minimise the risk of injury and to promote
health. Teagasc works with other organisations including the Health
and Safety Authority (HSA) and member organisations of the HSA Farm
Safety Partnership Advisory committee to deliver an effective
health and safety service.
Health and Safety Authority
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is the national body in
Ireland with responsibility for securing health and safety at work.
It is a state-sponsored body, established under the Safety, Health
and Welfare at Work Act and it reports to the Minister for
Enterprise, Trade and Innovation.

Visitor Safety in the
Countryside Group
The Visitor Safety in the Countryside Group was set up in May
1997. Since then the group has been meeting regularly to exchange
information and develop ideas. In particular, they have looked
at how to create safe access to the countryside in ways that do not
spoil the landscape and heritage, or lessen the visitor’s sense of
exploration and adventure. All members of the group own extensive
land and property and encourage public access. All are committed to
protecting and enhancing the environment. Group members have day to
day experience of visitor management, and include specialist safety
advisers.
