Overview

The recent news item on the categorisation of diesel exhaust fumes as carcinogenic has led to some discussion on the topic of liabilities that emplyers may face with future claims i.e 'aware that there was a problem and didn't do enough to control fumes.'

This webinar is aimed at providing some common sense practical advice that is hoped will prevent hysteria around the topic.

Speakers

Dr John Cherie
Research Director, Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM)

Dr John Cherie will help viewers understand the basis of the change - what was previously known, what has changed and why. He will explain the facts relating to exposure to diesel fumes and address if he feels enough is being done, if the HSLs advice is enough and answer any further questions posed by the viewers throughout the webinar.

Dr John Cherie is Research Director at the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) in Edinburgh and Honorary Reader at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He has a wide range of research interests including exposure assessment for regulatory risk assessment, dermal exposure assesment, occupational epidemiology and several other topics. He has been involved in two health impact studies on occupational cancer: one  for the UK Health and Safety Executive and the second for the European Commission.

Simon Morrow
Partner, BLM-LAW

Simon will cover the potential liability concerns that employers may have regarding exposure to diesel fumes now that they have been classified as carcinogenic.

Simon is a partner at BLM's Manchester office. He was admitted as a solicitor in England & Wales in 1989 and in Hong Kong in 1990. Simon joined BLM in 1997, becoming a partner in 2000. Simon specialises in employers’ liability and public liability cases, with a particular emphasis on occupational disease claims and claims relating to the leisure industry. He has a particular interest in claims arising from workplace exposure to dust and carcinogens, particularly asbestos, and claims for workplace stress.

Simon has produced articles for The Lawyer and Insurance Post, amongst others, and is a frequent contributor to BLM publications. He is a member of the BLM editorial board for disease-related publications and BLM's occupational disease and leisure industry focus groups.
