Leadership
To inspire employees to higher level of safety and productivity
requires clear vision, commitment and effective leadership from the
top of an organisation. It also requires guidance and
direction by those with supervisory roles on a daily
basis. In the absence of a process of engagement and
good safety leadership, only a handful of employees will commit
their heart and mind into safety effort. With high goals and
objectives it is not just safety that benefits but productivity and
employee morale too.
An example of good safety leadership in the food industry
is provided by Kettleby Foods part of Samworth Brothers.
Driven by the group Managing Director a programme has been
introduced to improve the safety culture and management of risks
across the business.
A key component is the respect Directors and senior
management give to staff
with employee value, commitment and contribution
recognised through a process of direct engagement. This is
driven by a programme of “Continuous Improvement” with
a programme of ongoing initiatives resulting
in productivity, quality and efficiency gains as well as
health and safety.
