IOSH background
I joined IOSH as a Tech SP Member in November 2001 after
completing the NVQ level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety, in
addition to several other trade union courses. I became a full
member in 2003, having completed an NVQ level 4.
Branch activity
- Member of Tyne and Wear Branch 2003 to date
- Member Tyne and Wear executive 2003 to date
- Secretary 2005 to 2009
- Vice-Chair 2009 to date
Professional experience
I started work as factory operative at Homeworthy Furniture in
1994 (later taken over by the Silentnight Group). I was heavily
involved in union activities and was nominated first as a safety
representative and later a senior safety representative.
After a number of major accidents, the then health and
safety manager left the company. I'd never contemplated
joining the management team, but the managing director gave
me an ultimatum: “If you think you can do better yourself...”
So I became the health and safety manager before
completing my NEBOSH and NVQ Level 4. We then worked together to
reducing the accident rate in addition to implementing new safe
systems of work and changing behaviour.
I then joined Amdega in Darlington in 2004, a woodwork
manufacturing company, where I am the Health, Safety and
Environment Manager.

I have a young daughter, Natasha, and live in the village of
Silksworth in Sunderland, where I've lived all my life. I'm a

many issues facing councillors. I also do voluntary work with the
