Professional experience
I was a toolmaker and maintenance engineer working in the

being employed in a health and safety role in a motor component
group in 1976. I joined Nissan in 1986, where I worked as head
of the Health and Safety Department until 2003, when I moved
to Industrial and Organisational Health as Operations Manager
and Safety Consultant.
I served for 12 years as a representative for the UK on several
European Machinery Safety working groups producing EN Standards,
including for pressure-sensitive devices and presses. I chaired the
Tyne and Wear Health at Work Steering Group, the Nissan Global
Ergonomic Group and held several posts in the Motor Industry Safety
Group, including overseeing the production of the industry's
Robotics Safety Standard. I have taken a particular interest in
health at work issues and studied health and safety management

Other interesting facts
I'm married with three daughters, one grandson and two
granddaughters - who keep me young, if a little tired.
I hold joint British and Canadian nationality. I'm the only
Fulham supporter in the North - I know that because I've been
the only one in the away end at Hartlepool on a cold Wednesday
December night, and we lost. Music taste - everything from Quo to
new country; my current favourite is Tim McGraw who I saw in
concert in Nashville in 2007.
