Welcome
IOSH is the Chartered body for health and
safety professionals. With more than 35,000 individual members,
we’re the biggest professional health and safety organisation in
the world.
The Tyne and Wear Branch serves over 1000 IOSH members in the
North East of England, primarily in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear,
and the northern half of County Durham.
As an organisation we’re committed to cutting down the number of
people who die or are made ill by what they do for a living. We
think that when it comes to health and safety, only advice from
qualified, experienced and skilled professionals will do. That’s
why one of our main roles is to maintain high standards. We
recognise that health and safety isn’t just down to the experts. We
work with a range of organisations to raise awareness and
standards.
The aim of the branch is to support its members in their
professional activities and in their professional development, and
to further the aims of the Institution. The branch plan and
constitution describe how the branch functions.
The Tyne and Wear Branch holds monthly meetings between
September and June, where members meet in a friendly and informal
atmosphere, exchange information and provide mutual support. A
guest speaker gives a presentation on a topical subject in the very
wide field of occupational safety and health. The Branch is well
supported by the local HSE office, who frequently attend to keep us
up to date with their activities. Keep an eye on the Events page
for details.
The Branch Executive Committee are dedicated to providing local
support for Members and assist with the seemingly daunting task of
achieving Chartered Status in our chosen profession. The Branch
Exec is aware that graduate and technician members require support
and guidance on the process to achieve Chartered Status. Therefore
the Branch runs workshops to assist Branch Members with the
process. See the events page for details of how we can help with
IPD, CPD and the interview process.
The IOSH Head Office provides Branch Officials with support and
often sends representatives to attend Branch events including an
annual visit from the current President. This provides Branch
Members with access to Head Office staff who can keep us informed
of the progress IOSH are making in promoting a professional
approach to health and safety.
Branch Meetings are open to any other professionals who have an
interest in the subject, and a number of meetings are designed to
be held as a joint meeting with other bodies in related fields,
such as HR, fire safety, occupational health or occupational
hygiene.
However you choose to engage with us, remember that it's your
branch and it's there to help you to improve occupational safety
and health. There are many opportunities for you if you'd
like to get more involved in the Branch and its
activities.
We look forward to welcoming you at our meetings and if you have
any queries please contact one of the Exec Members who will be only
too willing to help.
Phil Tye CMIOSH
Tyne & Wear Branch Chairman on behalf of the Branch.
