As a member of IOSH since the early
1990s, I've worked in health and safety in various industries. From
railways to engineering to chemicals, I've had experience at the
sharp end as well as working on policies and auditing. As well as
health and safety qualifications, I have a diploma in environmental
management and a degree in biology. My current job involves
providing an early warning of the health, safety and environmental
legislation that's round the corner.

Hi my name is Steve Andrews and I am
currently employed by a Local Authority on the South Coast.
My responsibilities include all issues relating to health and
safety that the council faces. My department of one covers a
variety of different issues ranging from dealing with sheltered
housing schemes to a assortment of items being washed up on the
districts beaches.
I find being part of the committee very
rewarding and particularly ensuring that each meeting is as
relaxing, informative, educational and entertaining as
possible.
I always look forward to meeting past and new
colleagues at our branch, so please come over and introduce
yourself to me or any other member of the committee.

Having worked in electronics, the leisure industry,
facilities and operational management, for the last eight
years I've been estates and facilities manager in an independent
school. Health and safety has always been an integral part of my
role. Being a part of IOSH helps me develop my
competence and glean and share information with like-minded
people.

Having worked in the construction industry since the late
1980s, initially involved in construction management but changing
career in the mid 1990s to health and safety, I believe I have a
reasonable understanding of how the industry works. Until recently
I had worked for a civil engineering and construction company for
almost 20 years, eventually leaving to progress my career.
Currently I'm working for a major residential developer in London.
I've been a member of IOSH since 1995.

I've been working in risk management for nearly 30
years, both in the insurance world as an underwriter and broker and
as a health and safety practitioner. I moved away from insurance in
the early 1990s as I felt that it was, on balance, better to stop
the bad things from happening rather than trying to put it back
together. I'm particularly interested in the way health and safety
management systems work with the management processes of an
organisation and especially how they can be used to improve
organisations' performances. Working with IOSH allows me to ensure
I'm up to date with best practice and gives me an opportunity to
meet and speak to people who are working in this field all the
time.

With a background in Health and Social
Care and Nutrition, Elaine qualified as a Lecturer in 1986. Since
becoming self employed as a Health and Safety Consultant in 2000
she has worked in many areas of Health and Safety. Her favourite
saying is ”If I don’t know, I know a man who does”. It is this
principle which enables her to assist others with their educational
and career decisions as well as keeping up to date herself.
