Public Services Section
Welcome to Public Services Section
(PSS) from the present Chairman Terry Hall.
Some years ago, not long after joining a local authority, I
was taken by a colleague to a PSS afternoon event. From my first
visit I was impressed, not only by the quality of speakers who give
up their time freely to help spread the safety message but also by
the committee members who went out of their way to be friendly and
welcoming to newcomers. I continued to regularly attend PSS and at
the first AGM I attended I volunteered to join the Committee. I
feel honoured to be the present Chairman of the PSS Committee and
follow an illustrious list of former Chairmen, including the past
present IOSH President John Holden.
The Public Services Section is an
active and long established part of the Manchester and North West Branch. Presently we
have over 500 members and we meet on a monthly basis. As a
committee, every year, we try to bring you a variety of speakers
and a variation of topics, with the aim of appealing to as wide an
audience as possible. The event is open to all, whether they are
from other branches or simply guests or visitors.
Although the main focus of the
meeting is the presentation, we must not ignore the great
networking opportunities that attending the meetings brings. Not
only do we get to meet new people in our own profession, we also
learn from shared ideas and views. Listening to lessons already
learnt by others can often avoid us making mistakes or give us a
‘heads-up’ on topics that are new to us or we were not too familiar
with.
We usually meet on the second
Tuesday afternoon of each month at the Brookfield Masonic Hall, Westhoughton. It is
located off the M61(junction 5 or 6) near Bolton. For those who use
navigation systems, the postcode is BL5
3SP.
Our presentations start at 13.30
however from 12.30 we provide a light buffet lunch and an
opportunity to network. However, on occasions we have joint
meetings with others or we have the meeting at another location,
therefore it is always best to check the IOSH website for details
of each meeting.
Please come along and support us or
even better join us. If you want to get involved or if you have
ideas where we could improve or better meet the needs of our
members, please come and talk to a member of the committee when you next visit.
