Managing and mitigating acoustic impact risks during Royal Navy
anti submarine warfare operations

Overview
This meeting is organised by Manchester Branch Central Lancashire District.
Speakers
Matt Summers
From 2005 until earlier this year, Matt
Summers led the Ministry of Defence's Underwater Acoustic Impact
Research Programme within the MOD's Defence Science and Technology
Laboratory. This multi-million pound programme was designed to
provide tools, techniques and knowledge to enable the Royal Navy
and Royal Air Force to deploy active sonar to protect the UK's
interests whilst complying with increasingly stringent
legislation.
Matt's talk will discuss the issues that faced the Royal Navy from
an operational, legal and moral perspective and the potential
threat to a £320m equipment purchase, efforts that went into
engagement with lobbyists and wider Government, and some of the
world leading solutions that were devised and deployed into the
Fleet to ensure that the Royal Navy, unlike some its international
counterparts, could continue operating active sonar.
