Branch congratulates winners of the IOSH Student Research
Competition 2008
The IOSH Safety Sciences Group, which
promotes an evidence base to occupational safety and health
practice, holds an annual Student Research Competition, in
which academics in all universities with programmes accredited
by IOSH are invited to encourage their top BSc and MSc students to
submit abstracts of their research projects.
The Safety Sciences Group committee ranks the entries, based on
set criteria provided to contestants, and awards top prize to two
students (a place at the IOSH 08 conference, with accommodation,
and a 15-minute slot in a spotlight session to present their
project, in addition to displaying a poster of their work on the
Safety Sciences stand); eight additional students are chosen to
present a poster at the conference stand.
In the 2008 competition, two Irish students, who completed the
BSc in OSH Management in University College Dublin, entered the
competition and were awarded joint first place.
Michael Doyle and Hilda Dowler will both present a poster and a
presentation at the conference spotlight session, and be presented
with a Certificate by the President of IOSH at an evening reception
associated with the IOSH08 conference.
Their research project topics were:
- Hilda Dowler: Nursing Staff Knowledge of Influenza Virus and
Factors affecting Influenza Vaccination Uptake Rates
- Michael Doyle: An investigation into the attitudes of staff of
a large Irish energy utility to work related Road Traffic Risk
factors, in relation to the management of Health and Safety at
work.
Dr Anne Drummond, of the School of Public Health and Population
Science, UCD, who is vice-chair of the IOSH Safety Sciences Group
committee, stood down from judging entries to the competition this
year, as she supervises the BSc student projects in UCD.
