Radiation, radioactivity - what's it all about?
Overview
This is an interactive talk describing what radiation is,
the difference between ionising radiation and non-ionising
radiation, and their significance to the safety practitioner.
The talk will cover non-ionising radiation, including lasers and
the new Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations
which became law in April 2010.
It will also cover ionising radiation, demystifying some of the
hype that surrounds the subject.
There will be experiments and illustrations of the principles,
and attendees will get a chance to use a Geiger counter for simple
experiments.
What's in it for me
You will go away knowing whether you need to take any additional
actions to meet the new regulations.
You will have a better understanding of radiation, and you can
ask any questions! If the speaker does not know the answer, she
will undertake to try to find out.
Who should attend?
This is aimed at all Safety Practitioners and managers who want
to understand more about what radiation IS, and how to
recognise when they need help.
Speakers
Jane Blunt Safety Officer, Department of
Physics, University of Cambridge
